After the Tide — Tracing Heritage through AI and XR
A collaborative exploration of how spatial evidence in traditional paintings and heritage environments can become generative narratives and immersive public experiences.
About the workshop
Spatial traces become evidence for a shared heritage narrative.
The workshop asks participants to look beyond the visible surface of traditional Chinese paintings. Using AI-assisted methods, they identify narrative threads in figures, spatial structures and cultural context, then extend these observations into real-world architectural heritage and interactive virtual reality experiences.
An augmented reality programme connects historical imagery with experimental AI aesthetics and helps participants reconstruct relationships between people and heritage spaces. A VR prototype inspired by the fishing village of Tai O invites participants to compare spatial clues and piece together connections between memory, place and cultural identity.
Participation
Open to researchers, students and practitioners.
The workshop welcomes participants from architecture, design, cultural heritage, digital media and interactive design. No prior Unity or VR development experience is required. Meta Quest devices support a collective exploration of Chinese aesthetics, architectural storytelling and computational design.
The half-day session combines AI-assisted visual inquiry, AR reconstruction, spatial forensics and XR prototyping. Participants move from reading cultural evidence to creating an interactive narrative that members of the public can explore.
